derrubaram o governo eleito de Manuel <SPAN>Zelaya</SPAN> há duas semanas,
ouviu-se um suspiro de alívio nas salas da <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> Inc., grande
corporação da plantação e distribuição de frutas. No início de 2009, a empresa,
que tem sede em <SPAN>Cincinnati</SPAN>, fez eco às críticas de
<SPAN>Dole</SPAN> contra o governo em Tegucigalpa, que aumentara o salário
mínimo nacional em 60%. A <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> reclamou que as novas leis
afetariam seus lucros; que a empresa passaria a gastar em Honduras mais do que
na Costa Rica: 20 <SPAN><I><SPAN
style="FONT-STYLE: italic">cents</SPAN></I></SPAN> a mais para produzir um
engradado de abacaxis e 10 <SPAN><I><SPAN
style="FONT-STYLE: italic">cents</SPAN></I></SPAN> a mais, para ser exato, para
produzir um engradado de bananas. No total a <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> alegou que
perderia milhões de dólares por efeito das reformas trabalhistas de
<SPAN>Zelaya</SPAN>, dado que a corporação produzia cerca de 8 milhões de
engradados de abacaxi e 22 milhões de engradados de bananas por ano.

salário mínimo ser aprovado, a <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> procurou apoio junto ao
<SPAN>Honduran</SPAN> <SPAN>National</SPAN> Business <SPAN>Council</SPAN>,
conhecido pela sigla em espanhol COHEP. Como a <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN>, o COHEP
também estava muito infeliz com o novo salário mínimo aprovado por
<SPAN>Zelaya</SPAN>. Amílcar <SPAN>Bulnes</SPAN>, presidente do grupo,
imediatamente ameaçou que, se o governo mantivesse o novo salário mínimo, as
empresas seriam obrigadas a demitir, o que aumentaria o desemprego no país.
Principal organização de empresários de Honduras, o COHEP reúne 60
associações comerciais e câmaras de comércio nas quais estão representados todos
os setores da economia de Honduras. (...) Hoje, a opinião do COHEP é que a
ONU e a OEA devem enviar observadores a Honduras para que comprovem que o país
não suportará sanções. A COHEP apoia o golpe de Estado e o governo de Roberto
<SPAN>Micheletti</SPAN> e argumenta que <SPAN>Zelaya</SPAN> não deve voltar ao
país, em nome de manter-se a <SPAN>tranquilidade</SPAN> e a paz.

Sindicatos <SPAN>Bananeros</SPAN> (<SPAN>Colsiba</SPAN>, em <A
onclick="return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)"
href="http://www.colsiba.org/" target=_blank>http://www.colsiba.org/</A>), que
reúne os trabalhadores das plantações de banana na América Latina, tem
denunciado que a <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> não oferece equipamento de segurança aos
empregados e tem-se recusado a assinar acordos trabalhistas coletivos na
Nicarágua, Guatemala e em Honduras.</SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="MARGIN-TOP: 6pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Georgia size=2><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Georgia">A <SPAN>Colsiba</SPAN> compara as
condições de trabalho nas plantações da empresa <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> a campos
de concentração. É comparação explosiva, à qual não falta boa dose de verdade.
As mulheres empregadas nas plantações da <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> em toda a América
Central trabalham das 6h da manhã às 19h, com grossas luvas de borracha que lhes
queimam as mãos. Há trabalho infantil. Os trabalhadores latino-americanos têm
tentado denunciar as condições de trabalho impostas pela empresa
<SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN>, inclusive a exposição a produtos tóxicos, como o DBCP,
pesticida que provoca esterilidade, câncer e defeitos congênitos em bebês.

da <SPAN>United</SPAN> <SPAN>Fruit</SPAN> <SPAN>Company</SPAN> <SPAN>and</SPAN>
<SPAN>United</SPAN> <SPAN>Brands</SPAN>, tem longa e terrível história política
em toda a América Latina. Presidida por <SPAN>Sam</SPAN> “O homem-banana"
<SPAN>Zemurray</SPAN>, a <SPAN>United</SPAN> <SPAN>Fruit</SPAN> entrou no
negócio de plantar bananas no início do século 20. <SPAN>Zemurray</SPAN>
declarou certa vez, em frase que se tornou famosa, que "Em Honduras,
<SPAN>gasta-se</SPAN> mais para comprar uma mula, que um deputado do
Parlamento." Na década dos 1920s, a <SPAN>United</SPAN> <SPAN>Fruit</SPAN>
controlava 650 mil acres da melhor terra de Honduras, praticamente um quarto de
toda a terra agricultável. E, ainda mais grave que isso, controlava todas as
estradas e vias férreas.</SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="MARGIN-TOP: 6pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Georgia size=2><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Georgia">Em Honduras, a influência das

com participação da CIA, em 1954, contra o presidente <SPAN>Jacobo</SPAN>
<SPAN>Arbenz</SPAN>, reformista que havia iniciado um projeto de longo prazo de
reforma agrária. A derrubada do governo de <SPAN>Arbenz</SPAN> levou <SPAN>a 30
anos</SPAN> de agitação e guerra civil na Guatemala. Depois, em 1961, a
<SPAN>United</SPAN> <SPAN>Fruit</SPAN> emprestou seus barcos para exilados
cubanos apoiados pela CIA que tentaram derrubar o governo de Fidel Castro, no
que ficou conhecido como "ataque à Baía dos Porcos". </SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="MARGIN-TOP: 6pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Georgia size=2><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: Georgia">Em 1972, a <SPAN>United</SPAN>
<SPAN>Fruit</SPAN> (já sob o novo nome de <SPAN>United</SPAN>
<SPAN>Brands</SPAN>) impôs, em Honduras, o governo do general Oswaldo López
<SPAN>Arellano</SPAN>. O ditador foi depois substituído, em função de um
escândalo de propinas que a <SPAN>United</SPAN> <SPAN>Brands</SPAN> dava a
<SPAN>Arellano</SPAN>, que ficou conhecido como "<SPAN>Bananagate</SPAN>". A
Corte Suprema acusou a <SPAN>United</SPAN> <SPAN>Brands</SPAN> de subornar
<SPAN>Arellano</SPAN> com <SPAN>1,25 milhão</SPAN> de dólares, suborno acrescido
de outro 1,25 milhão, quando o governo reduziu as taxas de exportação de frutas.
Durante o <SPAN><I><SPAN
style="FONT-STYLE: italic">Bananagate</SPAN></I></SPAN>, o presidente da
<SPAN>United</SPAN> <SPAN>Brands</SPAN> <SPAN>morreu,</SPAN> no que se suspeita
que tenha sido suicídio, ao cair de um arranha-céu em Nova
York.</SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="MARGIN-TOP: 6pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><B><FONT face=Georgia

"go-go" nos anos Clinton e a Colômbia</SPAN></FONT></B><B><FONT face=Georgia

<SPAN>Fruits</SPAN> também tem negócios na Colômbia, onde age com igual
violência há praticamente o mesmo tempo. Em 1928, 3.000 trabalhadores entraram
em greve, exigindo da empresa melhor salário e melhores condições de trabalho. A
empresa, inicialmente, se recusou a negociar; mais tarde, cedeu a algumas
reivindicações secundárias e declarou que as demais seriam "ilegais" ou
"impossíveis". Quando os trabalhadores recusaram-se a abandonar a praça onde
estavam reunidos, os militares atiraram e mataram centenas.</SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="MARGIN-TOP: 6pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Georgia size=3><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt; FONT-FAMILY: Georgia">A <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> jamais
alterou profundamente qualquer de suas políticas trabalhistas. Mas as coisas
tornaram-se ainda mais difíceis no final dos anos 90s, quando a empresa aliou-se
a grupos paramilitares de direita. Sabe-se que essas milícias receberam da
<SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> mais de um milhão de dólares. Em sua defesa, a empresa
declarou que pagava para receber proteção, aos paramilitares. <SPAN>
</SPAN></SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="MARGIN-TOP: 6pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Georgia size=3><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt; FONT-FAMILY: Georgia">Em 2007, a <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN>
pagou 25 milhões de dólares como multa, condenada em processo investigado pelo
Departamento de Justiça dos EUA, relacionado àqueles pagamentos a milícias e
paramilitares. A <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> é a única empresa, em toda a história dos
EUA, que foi condenada por manter negócios e relações financeiras com
organização identificada como "organização terrorista". </SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="MARGIN-TOP: 6pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Georgia size=3><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt; FONT-FAMILY: Georgia">Em processo movido contra a
<SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN>, vítimas da violência dos paramilitares declararam que a
empresa continua a patrocinar todo o tipo de atrocidades, inclusive o
terrorismo, crimes de guerra e crimes contra a humanidade. O advogado das
vítimas declarou que o relacionamento entre a empresa <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> e os
paramilitares "já mostrava sinais claros de produção, distribuição e venda de
banana sob regime de terror."

deixou de cortejar a Casa Branca. <SPAN>Lindner</SPAN> sempre foi dos maiores
doadores para as campanhas eleitorais dos Republicanos; em certo momento, passou
a doar prodigamente também para os Democratas, então empenhados em eleger Bill
Clinton. Clinton agradeceu-lhe fazendo de <SPAN>Lindner</SPAN> principal
assessor militar do governo de Andrés <SPAN>Pastrana</SPAN>, que presidia então
uma Colômbia em que proliferavam os esquadrões da morte. Ao mesmo tempo, os EUA
dedicavam-se à <SPAN>implementação</SPAN> de sua agenda neoliberal, de governo
pelas corporações econômicas, estratégia que sempre fora defendida por Thomas
“<SPAN>Mack</SPAN>” <SPAN>McLarty</SPAN>, amigo de infância de Clinton.
<SPAN>McLarty</SPAN> já servira como Enviado Especial para a América Latina. É
figura intrigante, à qual voltaremos nos parágrafos

mantém relações com os mais poderosos escritórios de advocacia de Washington.
Segundo o Centro de Defesa da Política com Responsabilidade, a
<SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> pagou 70 mil dólares por serviços de <I><SPAN
style="FONT-STYLE: italic">lobby</SPAN></I> ao escritório <SPAN>Covington</SPAN>
& <SPAN>Burling</SPAN> nos últimos três anos. </SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="MARGIN-TOP: 6pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face=Georgia size=3><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt; FONT-FAMILY: Georgia">O escritório
<SPAN>Covington</SPAN> & <SPAN>Burling</SPAN> é conhecido por prestar
serviços de assessoria a multinacionais. Eric <SPAN>Holder</SPAN>, atual
Procurador Geral, que foi co-coordenador geral da campanha de Obama e foi
representante do Procurador Geral no Congresso no governo de Bill Clinton foi
sócio do escritório até há pouco tempo. O mesmo <SPAN>Holder</SPAN>, quando
ainda sócio de C & B, cuidou da defesa da <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> quando a
empresa foi processada pelo Departamento de Justiça. Em sua sala luxuosa, na
nova sede de C & B, a alguns metros do prédio do <I><SPAN
style="FONT-STYLE: italic">New York Times</SPAN></I> em <SPAN>Manhattan</SPAN>,
<SPAN>Holder</SPAN> preparou Fernando <SPAN>Aguirre</SPAN>, presidente da
<SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN>, para uma entrevista ao programa "60 Minutos" sobre os
esquadrões da morte colombianos.</SPAN></FONT></P>

<SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> a reconhecer que a empresa foi culpada do crime de
"envolver-se em transações com uma específica organização terrorista". Ao mesmo
tempo, o advogado, que recebeu mais de dois milhões de dólares como
<SPAN>honorários, conseguiu</SPAN> montar com a Corte um acordo 'de irmãos',
pelo qual a <SPAN>Chiquita</SPAN> pagaria uma multa de 25 milhões de dólares,
parcelados em cinco anos. E nenhum dos executivos acusados que aprovaram todos
os pagamentos ao grupo terrorista seria <SPAN>condenado</SPAN> a

<SPAN>Negroponte</SPAN> é ex-representante do Secretário de Estado no Congresso,
foi diretor do Serviço Nacional de Inteligência e representante dos EUA na ONU.

destaque no apoio aos "Contra" que conspiravam para derrubar o governo
sandinista na Nicarágua. Grupos defensores de direitos <SPAN>humanos
várias</SPAN> vezes denunciaram <SPAN>Negroponte</SPAN> por ignorar crimes
cometidos pelos esquadrões da morte hondurenhos, os quais, como depois se
descobriu, eram treinados pela CIA. De fato, no período em que
<SPAN>Negroponte</SPAN> serviu como embaixador em Honduras, a embaixada em
Tegucigalpa tornou-se uma das maiores bases da CIA na América Latina (o número
de funcionários decuplicou). </SPAN></FONT></P>

legalidade constitucional. O próprio Zelaya que entrou em Honduras às sete horas
da manhã solicitou a este jornalista através de amigos comuns que corrigisse a
informação – “é minha “filha” e não filho, que ao lado da minha mulher lidera
manifestações por todos os cantos” –.</SPAN></P>

Obama, neste momento, está acuado dentro de seu próprio país, já que setores do
complexo empresarial e militar querem manter a todo custo o governo
