style="COLOR: #000099">Mahmoud Darwish morreu durante cirurgia cardíaca, no
Hospital Memorial Hermann, no Texas. Ann Brimberry, porta-voz do hospital,
informou aos jornalistas da rede Al Jazeera, que Darwish morreu às 13h35pm
(18h35 GMT).</SPAN><BR><BR></FONT><SPAN style="COLOR: #000099">Siham Daoud,
poeta e amiga de Darwish, 67, informou que o poeta deixara instruções expressas
para não ser ressuscitado, caso a cirurgia não fosse bem-sucedida. Contou que
Darwish chegara há 10 dias aos EUA para a cirurgia, e que já passara por duas
operações cardíacas anteriores.<BR>Conhecido em todo o mundo por seu empenho a
favor da independência da Palestina, com longa experiência de exilado e de
militante político, Darwish era crítico incansável da política de Israel e da
ocupação da Palestina.</SPAN><BR><BR><SPAN style="COLOR: #000099">Muitos de seus
poemas foram musicados - o mais conhecido destes é "Rita, aves da Galiléia" e
"Sonho com o pão de minha mãe", que se tornaram hinos de resistência para pelo
menos duas gerações de árabes. </SPAN><BR><BR><SPAN style="COLOR: #000099">"Ele
manifestava a pulsação dos palestinenses, em bela poesia. Era um espelho da
sociedade palestinense", disse Ali Qleibo, antropólogo palestinense, e
conferencista de Estudos Culturais da Universidade Al Quds, em
Jerusalém.</SPAN><BR><BR><SPAN style="COLOR: #000099">Ano passado, Darwish
declamou um poema de protesto contra a luta entre os grupos Hamás e Fatah. Para
ele, esta disputa seria "suicídio em público, pelas ruas."</SPAN><BR><BR><SPAN
style="COLOR: #000099">Darwish nasceu na vila de Barweh, na Galiléia, uma das
vilas que foi arrasada na guerra de 1948, para o estabelecimento do Estado de
Israel. Alistou-se no Partido Comunista de Israel logo depois do ginásio, e
começou a publicar versos em publicações políticas de
esquerda.</SPAN><BR><BR><SPAN style="COLOR: #000099">Foi preso (prisão doméstica
e depois foi encarcerado) por atividades políticas; depois de libertado
trabalhou como editor do jornal Ittihad, que deixou, em 1971, para estudar na
União Soviética.</SPAN><BR><BR><SPAN style="COLOR: #000099">Originalmente membro
da OLP (Organização para a Libertação da Palestina), Darwish desligou-se em
1993, em protesto contra os acordos de paz assinados por Arafat, com o governo
de Israel.<BR>Como jornalista, trabalhou no jornal al-Ahram no Cairo; mais
tarde, foi diretor do Centro de Pesquisa Palestinense. </SPAN><BR><BR><SPAN
style="COLOR: #000099">Em 2000, Yossi Sarid, ministro da Educação de Israel,
sugeriu que se incluíssem alguns dos poemas de Darwish no currículo escolar das
escolas secundárias israelenses. Ehud Barak, primeiro-ministro, impediu que o
projeto fosse levado adiante, dizendo que Israel ainda não estaria preparada
para a divulgação de tais idéias pelo sistema escolar. </SPAN><BR><BR><SPAN
style="COLOR: #000099">Em 2001, Darwish recebeu o Prêmio Lannan, por sua luta
pela liberdade cultural.</SPAN><BR><SPAN style="COLOR: #000099">Leaves of Olives
foi publicado em 1964; Darwish tinha 22 anos. Desde então, já se publicaram mais
de vinte volumes de sua poesia. </SPAN></DIV>
